Assistant Professor in Emergency and Intensive Care Nursing at the Cyprus University of Technology

Dr. Meropi Mpouzika is Assistant Professor in Critical Care Nursing at the Department of Nursing at the Cyprus University of Technology. She is the Head of the Master in Advanced Emergency & Intensive Nursing Care and she is teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate levels. She received her BSc, MSc and PhD in Critical Nursing Care from the University of Athens, Department of Nursing, Greece. She has over 15 years of clinical experience in a number of Intensive Care Units in Greece. Her main research interests revolve around nursing management of critically ill patients and especially the effects of stress and pain experienced while hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Biological research (including laboratory research) is another field of interest, and she studies how stress can contribute to the onset of multiple organ dysfunction and apoptosis in critical illness. Within this context, she studies the impact of the critical care environment on both patients and nurses. In 2018 she became the National Coordinator for Cyprus for two multicenter international studies entitled: DecubICUs Pressure Ulcers in Intensive Care Units and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in ICU patients.

Her future research plans include the exploration of morbidity and mortality of Post Intensive Care Syndrome among survivors of critical illness as well as the effectiveness of nurse-led educational programs. These programs will involve intensive and emergency care nurses and will aim to the early recognition and management of sepsis and acute ischemic stroke. She has authored and co-authored a significant number of peer-reviewed scientific papers and has presented her research work at national and international conferences.
