Lecture Summary

Quality indicators are essential tools to guide quality improvement efforts in pediatric intensive care units. These metrics allow identifying areas in need of improvement in order to plan preventive and corrective actions. PICU managers should use quality indicators and their standard values as a guide to set their units’ goals and design their improvement projects Health organizations can use indicators as a tool for external benchmarking and internal tracking of improvements. By means of measurement, publication, and recognition, such metrics can help reduce the variability of healthcare quality.
