This presentation provides an overview of the role and function of psychologists in the ICU and briefly highlights the value of the psychologist in ICU care teams. Common psychological problems experienced by ICU patients are discussed, including delirium, anxiety, frightening psychological experiences, such as delusional thoughts and hallucinations, and dysphoric mood. Psychological morbidity associated with critical illness and ICU admission is described as well. Finally, this presentation reviews practical tips and management strategies for decreasing distress and targeting delirium in this population.
