Lecture Summary

The concept of teams in healthcare is more recent. Individual brilliance has gradually been replaced with integrated team work in complex healthcare systems. Historically compared with the airlines' industry, teamwork in the critical care units has its distinct differences: a greater variety and acuity of challenges and a lack of consistent team members being the two more important ones. Various evidence-based methods can evaluate and improve teamwork in the units. Ever increasing evidence from various parts of the world relate  improved teamwork during multidisciplinary rounds and communication in the ICU to better patient outcomes.
