Lecture Summary

Given the high costs of, and the demand for, intensive care, understanding the resource implications of clinical decisions is essential. Economic evaluations are used to generate evidence-based information, mainly through cost-effectiveness analysis, to determine the value of an intervention and assist decision makers allocate health care resources. To date, the use of economic evaluations in intensive care has been limited. This talk will outline the importance of cost-effectiveness analyses in intensive care, and will discuss the existing evidence and the challenges associated with conducting these analyses.
