Lecture Summary

Critical illness is common among patients with hematologic malignancy and may arise due to complications from treatment or the underlying disease. ICU outcomes for this patient population have significantly improved in recent decades and there are multiple emergencies that are essential for critical care clinicians to recognize and promptly treat. This talk will discuss the approach to the following complications in detail: hyperleukocytosis and leukostasis, acute promyelocytic leukemia, tumor lysis syndrome, febrile neutropenia and neutropenic sepsis.
