Nurses practice in many settings and are at front line, delivering care which is safe, effective and holistic. With the influx of emerging therapies, it is important for oncology nurses to adapt themselves to this increased demand for care and therefore nursing leadership is paramount. This session discusses current nursing scenario in developed and developing countries, challenges faced by oncology nurses, new leadership styles, nursing empowerment and few strategies to improve nursing leadership in cancer care.

Prof. Meera Achrekar

Dr. Meera Achrekar has worked in various capacities throughout her career spanning 25 years and is presently Deputy Nursing Superintendent at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre. She also holds the academic position of Professor, Homi Bhabha National Institute (deemed university) at the Tata Memorial Hospital. Dr. Achrekar is also the coordinator of ACTREC’s Cancer Awareness Programme, Principle Assessor with the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare (NABH), Secretary of Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), Millennium city branch, and External Secretary of the Asia Oncology Nursing Society (AONS).
Dr Achrekar obtained her Bachelor’s (1986) and Master’s degree (2001) in Nursing from Leelabai Thackersey College of Nursing, where she stood first during year two of the Master’s programme and stood first in Clinical speciality too.
Dr. Achrekar also holds a Master’s degree in Sociology, certification in Healthcare Waste Management, and a professional diploma in Clinical Research. In 2015, she has been awarded the Doctorate degree by SNDT University for her research on ‘Clinical communication skills of nurses’. Her research focus is on Quality Improvement in Cancer Care Nursing. She has presented papers at several national and international meetings, winning a first and second prize for paper presentations.
