Lecture overview

The current Covid-19 pandemic has challenged not only entire hospital systems but also thousands of healthcare providers who are increasingly grappling with mental health difficulties such as anxiety and distress.   This webinar aims to describe psychological challenges faced by health care providers, to provide a framework to understand these challenges and to provide practical insights and guidance to help optimize coping and enhance emotional functioning.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lecture, the attendee will be able to:

  1. Articulate reasons why mental health problems are possible and pose significant concern during the current pandemic. 
  2. Identify warning signs that indicate the existence of stress and coping difficulties. 
  3. Initiate steps to attend to and improve self-care and emotional functioning. 
  4. Discuss with friends and colleagues the principles of effective coping. 
  5. Create an organizational culture conducive to promoting mental health.

PsyD

Dr James Jackson, PsyD, is the Assistant Director of The ICU Recovery Centre at Vanderbilt (one of the only clinic in the US devoted to treating survivors of critical illness), a Research Associate Professor and the Lead Psychologist for the CIBS Centre at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He earned his PsyD degree in Clinical Psychology at Biola University in July 2001, completed a psychology residency at the Vanderbilt/VA Psychology Consortium, and was a VA Clinical Research Centre of Excellence (CRCOE) Fellow and a Visiting Scholar at the Oliver Zangwill Centre in Ely, England, where he received extensive training in neuropsychological rehabilitation. 

As a licensed psychologist and active researcher and clinician, he is one of the world\s leading authorities on depression, PTSD, and cognitive functioning in survivors of critical illness. He has authored over 90 scientific publications in leading scientific journals and has been interviewed in articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, and many other prominent media venues. 

Dr. Jackson is a popular lecturer and has spoken at academic meetings, major universities and medical centres around the globe.
