Post Intensive Care Syndrome, popularly known as PICS, is a condition that affects large numbers of intensive care unit (ICU) survivors. PICS is defined as a syndrome in which individuals experience new or worsening difficulties in cognitive, mental health, or physical functioning domains and, as a result, display difficulties in functioning. While always a concern, the likelihood of individuals developing PICS during the COVID-19 pandemic is very high and thus an issue that medical providers, patients, and families should pay close attention to. In this presentation, we will discuss wide-ranging aspects of PICS, with a focus on prevention and treatment strategies, both in the ICU and beyond.
By the end of this lecture, the attendee will be able to:
- Describe the key components that constitute Post Intensive Care Syndrome.
- Identify key risk factors for the development of Post Intensive Care Syndrome.
- Articulate key approaches to the treatment of Post Intensive Care Syndrome.
- Highlight key facets of a Post Intensive Care Syndrome focused research agenda.
- Provide a detailed rationale for why Post Intensive Care Syndrome will likely be an issue of urgent concern for survivors of COVID-19.

Dr. James Jackson
Dr James Jackson, PsyD, is the Assistant Director of The ICU Recovery Centre at Vanderbilt (one of the only clinic in the US devoted to treating survivors of critical illness), a Research Associate Professor and the Lead Psychologist for the CIBS Centre at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He earned his PsyD degree in Clinical Psychology at Biola University in July 2001, completed a psychology residency at the Vanderbilt/VA Psychology Consortium, and was a VA Clinical Research Centre of Excellence (CRCOE) Fellow and a Visiting Scholar at the Oliver Zangwill Centre in Ely, England, where he received extensive training in neuropsychological rehabilitation.
As a licensed psychologist and active researcher and clinician, he is one of the world\s leading authorities on depression, PTSD, and cognitive functioning in survivors of critical illness. He has authored over 90 scientific publications in leading scientific journals and has been interviewed in articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, and many other prominent media venues.
Dr. Jackson is a popular lecturer and has spoken at academic meetings, major universities and medical centres around the globe.
