Lecture overview

ARDS is a life-threatening illness that results in complex management within the Intensive Care. In this talk, we will explore the developments surrounding ARDS and how to best treat our patients suffering from ARDS. Strategies for optimal ventilation and appropriate fluid management are vital in ARDS patients to aid a better outcome. We will also discuss supplementary therapies and the effects of pharmacological treatments. 

This lecture will include discussion around COVID-19.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lecture, the attendee will be able to:

  1. Describe and perform optimal ventilation strategies for patients with ARDS.
  2. Describe and understand fluid management in patients with ARDS.
  3. Discuss and understand adjunctive therapies for the treatment of ARDS.
  4. Discuss pharmacological treatments.

Professor Danny McAuley

Dr. Danny McAuley is Professor and Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Queen’s University of Belfast. Since 2019 he is Director of the NIHR Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme and is a member of the NIHR Strategy Board. He undertook his training in Belfast, Birmingham, London and San Francisco. 

Prof. McAuley is Co-Director of Research for the UK Intensive Care Society. A key aim of his research work is to translate early research findings to improve patient outcomes. His major interest is in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). His other current research interests include nosocomial infections, sepsis diagnostics, delirium in critical illness and interventions to enhance recovery from critical illness.
